It took the right person to put me on the right path—and it happened in the strangest, smallest way. It wasn’t a program. It wasn’t a hotline. It was a stranger, a friend of a friend, having one small conversation with me at a time when I was lost. That conversation redirected who I was and what I was doing. That’s all it took. One person. One connection.
Why Jennifer Lowe Won’t Stop Asking ‘Are You Okay?’
When I was in high school, none of this was talked about. If you needed help, the stigma said you were “crazy,” that you were somehow less than. I truly believe we’ve had it wrong for a long time. Our brain is an organ, just like our heart. If your heart hurts, you see a cardiologist. If your knee hurts, you see an orthopedic specialist. Our brains deserve that same care, without any shame attached to it.
WHY WE ADVOCATE – Mike Schmidt
I was coming off the passing of my wife’s fast cancer in March. And throughout summer, if there was a concert stage to work, I worked it. The only weekend I was home was when we held her funeral. Many, many people came to our house to celebrate her life. We called it a send off. And then the rest of that summer, I ran hot, and I wasn’t fooling anybody that not only was in my inner circle, but just knew me. Like, “the guy’s starting to fall apart.”
